Re: Down to Earth box set
if memory serves me right they only played 2 gigs in london (the Hammersmith)on that tour and the were the only UK shows ?,fortunately i was on holiday visiting friends so was able to go, cant remember if it was the first or 2nd night ?AWESOME from Blackmore best i have ever seen him in person,he really did have a return to form at that time.
Well there it is. In all fairness the 90's was a fallow time for me going to concerts to see "classic rock" bands. I saw PD at De Montfort Hall around 96/97 and was surprised how much I enjoyed it, how fresh they sounded, but never went to too many shows at this time.

Roger sang backup though to call it singing is a push
In all honesty the lead vocals weren't particularly good either were they?
Graham Bonnet did a great job on the album but live he tended to shout his way through the show, he was a very powerful singer no doubt but he overdid the shouting IMHO.
Ritchie was a bit sloppy during the tour as well ,it was the start of the decline for his playing that would continue throughout the 80s.Though he did demonstrate enough of that gift to keep it interesting on that tour.I saw the tour at Ingliston in Edinburgh and the show was spectacular, highlights that stick in my mind were Cozys solo and Blackers climbing all over the place smashing guitars.
He did the same extended guitar smash, climbing on top of the PA etc. and throwing stuff into the crowd the following year at Ingliston, although i don`t think the sound/performance was considered as good as previous shows, in fact I think RB said somewhere that Ingliston was a low point of the 1981 tour, and i believe the first night at Edinburgh Playhouse in 1983 was also a bit of a disaster? I played in a band with a guy in the early 90`s who had been on the lighting crew for Rainbow`s gig at Indliston in `81 and he said at one of the sounchecks RB got very stroppy with someone operating a spotlight or something and that the guy in charge of the lighting crew basically said tone it down or we all walk, and RB did calm down, although I believe on the second nigh/day when i attended he didn`t come along to the venue to soundcheck, just let the roadies/techs do it instead?
Rainbow played 2 nights at ingliston in 81,Both nights had Rose Tattoo (poor mans ACDC) as support, i was at both gigs, and both were ok nothing more nothing less, the lasting impression i have of both those shows was JLTs cringeworthy stage persona ,why that guy was ever allowed near Rainbow (and indeed DP) will forever remain a mystery to me?WTF were you thinking Blackers
I didn't go to see Rainbow again until the 90s so I didn't attend the playhouse shows in 83, i simply couldn't stand JLT though i did go to see DP with him on the S&M tour and he was still bloody cringeworthy
I was at the Saturday 11th show at Ingliston but thought Rose Tattoo were superb saw them last year in Glasgow and still a great live band.
As for Rainbow it's hard to argue against the JLT thing but thought he did a pretty good job vocally. My biggest memory of the night was the brilliance of Ritchie's playing during Catch The Rainbow still not seen anything as good as that.
Then I saw Rainbow last time they played Glasgow a couple of years ago.
i like Rose Tattoo as well but they are still kinda a poor mans ACDC to me .
i agree JLT is a good singer no doubt but a bloody awful stage presence for a hard rock band.
Another lasting memory I have from those shows was Blackers appearing through a huge cloud of dry ice belting out the SOTW riff
Happy days indeed
I saw Rainbow both nights at Granby Hall in Leicester on this tour. Pretty much like your memories, I hated JLT prancing around and we seriously considered not going to the second night.
Remember CTR being great, and people burning posters of RB after the first night because there was no guitar demolition. I have no recollection of night 2 being any better, although iirc there was a guitar demolition.
This was where I lost Rainbow and never went to another show. I did like SIUA but wasn't motivated enough to see them live.
Actually Rainbow was really good at the start of the 1995-96 tour(s). Great show at Cirkus in Stockholm and totally sold out. Ritchie was ON then.
Yes, I have some boots of the early SIUA tour and RB is incredible. I definitely missed out, although I have no idea if they played in Leicester on this tour.

Re: Down to Earth box set
I know I have asked this before, but is there any film footage around of those 1995 London gigs? I was at the second night and TBH felt a little bit let down, it seemed smaller scale and less of a spectacle than seeing Rainbow as a teenager, and the BritPop thing was also in full swing, Oasis were at Earls Court the same nights as the Rainbow gigs, and that was all over the media as the greatest thing ever. RB`s sound was thin and he had obviously aged a bit, and it wasn`t until years later due to the wonder of YouTube and seeing the German gig that was filmed a few nights before that I realised how F*ucking amazing his playing actually was at the time.

Re: Down to Earth box set
Yes, the first night was audience filmed to a high standard from Spotlight kid second verse to the end of Burn. At least some on you tube.

Re:
This is weird again.
Most of the thread does not adress the topic but , I cant stand it really, repeats endless drivel , bashing JLT who did a great job.
I also saw his performances with Over The Rainbow and it was the closest thing I could get to reliving some of my memories of the excellent Straight Between The Eyes shows.
I Would definitely not have hesitated to see the Rainbow shows since 2016 if he(sic) had teamed up with the OTR line up.
At first Romero seemed a nice find but soon I could not stand his performance/voice.
Rondinelli could have speeded up the band while this current clown , David Keith I think its called is a joke. RB compaired him to Cozy which is an insult.
Johanson although a good player has no charisma , energy or anything what could make a keyboardplayer exciting.
That BN bassplayer, forgot his name again, already seemed a noce option for a rainbow reunion many years ago, also his voice but in recent years I find him paling.
Ritchie although lacking a lot due to whatever reasons has his great moments but its all played in a BN style, no drama,. no speed.
Really feel another "backingband" would have kicked him in the butt.
I m afraid he really wants to fade out like this.
Am I the only one the current "studio recordings" give us a Romero which voice is doctored?

I was down at the front at Ingilston (DTE Tour) and he smashed the guitar up in front me which was great fun! everyone I was with thought it was a great gig.
I was also at the Playhouse 83 gig. He played 2 nights and according to the local paper (Evening News) the band was forced to move all their sound system after having done all the set up due to some claim about health and safety. The gig lasted about halfway through Spotlight Kid when Ritchie walked off. Apparently {I wasn't there } the second night was a fantastic gig.
