Guy Pratt-My Bass and Other Animals

Just finished reading Guy Pratt (bass for the Coverdale Page gigs & Restless Heart album). A very funny and entertaining read. Highly recommended.

Just thought i'd share the Coverdale specific quotes.

"David Coverdale was a rare treat too. He was surprisingly bright and witty, very engaging and had quite the most superbly rich Richard Burton speaking voice, which made every utterance sound like a grand proclamation"

Pratt's wife Gala's (daughter of Pink Floyd's Rick Wright) best friend is Sara (daughter of Jon) Lord.
"Jon Lord [..had left Whitesnake..] when, amongst other things, it transpired that his tech was getting paid more than him"

"David hadn't seen Sara since she was about twelve. So said to David perhaps she should come down to rehearsals. 'Sara? That precious flower? why bring her forth that i may rest my eyes upon her once again'. Blimey, steady on"

"David looking wistfully after them (Gala & Sara) turned to me and said 'you know Guy, i can see you've got something particularly special to lose, but i tell you these days, you either catch some dreadful disease or they slap a lawsuit on ya' he then concluded triumphally, 'these are dark days indeed for a cocksman!'"

"having stood on stage next to David Coverdale dressed up like Long Jogn Silver shouting 'I can't hear you!' was probably the closest i'' ever come to doing panto. I also have to admit that some of those Whitesnake tunes are great fun to get stuck into, ironically or not."

On the recording of Restless Heart "with america in the grip of grunge a producer was brought in to 'contemporize without comprimise' as David out it. This translated as getting someone in who was familiar with the curremt milieu and then either disagreeing with or just ignoring everything they suggested. David wasn't going to make a grunge album in a million years, and it would've sounded ridiculous and forced if he had"

"David' taste in film was very eclectic as was his taste in music-lots of African stuff and obscure European choral music"

"In the studio, David would do what a lot of singers do: 'saving their voice', this entails singing the song softly until they're ready to record to guarantee freshness and vigour for the take. For rock singers, the higher and more glass shattering the pitch the better, something i've never understood. Would Richard Burton have got as far as he did if he'd squeaked like a deranged mouse? For run throughs David would often sing an octave lower than he intended to when recording. I thought it was a shame he didn't do the actual vocals the same way as he did in rehearsal. He's got such a great rich timbre when he sings low."
