2019

This year was the 50th anniversary of Deep Purple. Nothing special seemed to be done. Next year will be the 50th anniversary of MKII. Does anybody think, or know, of anything being done by the band, RB, or record companies to commemorate this?

They celebrated their 25th anniversary in 1993. By forcing the band to get Gillan back to do the "25th anniversary tour" with Mk II.

This indicates that they consider 1968 being the band's foundation year. Therefore I assume that they'll be even less anniversary fuzz in 2019 than there was this year, which of course means that there'll be nothing.

Idk, seems to me that with the exception of the 25th anniversary, that anniversaries are mostly a fan derived entity; the band doesn't seem to care less about them.

Indeed. Especially as they know that as soon as this anniversary subject comes up, a name will be dropped which they - at least one of them - strictly want to keep out of their business.

Re: 2019

My impression is that in 1991 the commercial level of success of JLT-fronted DP had been weak, and IG was therefore asked to return.
In my view, the anniversary was just an excuse to put a positive spin on a move they would have made also on the 24th or 26th year of the band.

Having said that, it is really sad to see a band that plays mostly old material anyway not celebrate their anniversary. Had it been because they don't want to rest on laurels and only play new material it would have been ok, but it is done only out of the need to avoid the hassle of doing business together again, even if for one night.

In an interview in 1984, Ian Paice once said something like this: "When we were asked why we did not reform, we answered in different ways, but deep down we knew those were just excuses" - This is a re-run.

Re: 2019

if not some form of reunion with former members, I'm not sure what they could really do to mark the occasion.

apart from on going touring I think the game's up, all (known) archive material released etc.

Well, I'm actually surprised the record companies aren't interested in releasing cd,dvd, Lp material. Sure they could make money off of it!

Perhaps they think they have released enough. How many "Live in Montreux" episodes are existing meanwhile?

Or Gillan has vetoed something again. And for older material, esp from Blackmore age, I assume contractural problems. Yeah, I would love to listen to Canada 1969, Scotland 1974, Providence 1985, but there are reasons why it doesn't happen.

Another reason we fans sometimes forget is also that the numbers are not there anymore. Touring is one thing, where they can still raise decent money, but as far as releasing products, every year that passes is getting worser and worser. Studio albums as well are mainly made when they feel like investing some time and money in an exercise that barely satisfies their general view of the band. Sadly, I think, as I love their last albums and I'd love to see them producing a few more.
