Have you seen both bands? I'm intrigued by your suggestion that they're the same band. Well not just intrigued, more astounded! As a non tribute band fan, as I've already said, it took a long time for me to venture out and give Blackmore's Blood a go.
I then made the effort, and it was an effort, to go and see Rainbow Rising. They are completely different, the latter is an 'Act, they play the songs, thats about it... but Blackmore's Blood ... now that's an experience, a Blackmore experience. There's no comparison...

Well, to me that means an important dimension to the music is gone. Blackmore, Lord and the others based their performances on improvisation. The interplay between the musicians, responding to the moment etc all were important ingredients to the live shows. Each night was different. And these were factors that made the music so good.
Playing the songs note for note makes it all too static and it means important elements are gone and I could as well stay at home and play the record.
I'm OK with tribute bands. It gives a live audience a chance to hear songs played when the original artists are gone or have stopped playing the material and I'm sure there are bands that are good and give you a lot of fun. But it is what it is -a tribute. Nothing original.

After reading this thread, I thought I should add something.
Improvisation does play a part in their show. However priority is given to what an audience wants to hear and the overwhelming opinion is they want to hear the songs as Deep Purple or Rainbow recorded them. Either on a studio album or live album. Some are a mix between the two versions and they go down well too. But certainly, they do improvise when it's a time to do so. Especially keyboard and guitar. In fact, their guitar player would rather improvise all the solos, it makes it easier for him.
Remember, a lot of the audience have never seen the classic DIO era live, so their only reference is the studio albums and On Stage. Same could be said for Deep Purple fans. The majority want classic MK2. So again, it's studio albums or Made in Japan. Their set also tributes Mk1 & Mk3 Deep Purple too and across the board for Rainbow.
They also have support, recognition and even technical advice from several personnel who have worked closely with Ritchie Blackmore over the past 40+yrs, so they must be doing something right.
As for Blackmore's Blood & Rainbow Rising being the same band, well, when Rainbow Rising called it a day, about 4yrs ago, their keyboard player went on to help form Blackmore's Blood. Later, Rainbow Rising came back under a different name, The Blackmore Legacy. Later again, they reverted back to their original name, Rainbow Rising, with the keyboard player now playing in both Rainbow Rising and Blackmore's Blood.
They are 2 different bands.

I think it's fair to say, reading these reviews, that people have different expectations of what they want to hear. I agree with Rising Rocks in that I want to hear the songs as they were recorded. I've recently been sent a recording of another tribute band from a few years ago where the 'Ritchie', who was wearing a decidedly dodgy looking wig, seemed intent on putting his own spin on Sixteenth Century Greensleeves. It's not how I want to hear it, why ruin such a beautiful song? I want to hear it how it was on the album and the guitarist in Blackmore's Blood does a beautiful rendition of this leading into Catch The Rainbow, close my eyes and I hear Rainbow Live. It's simply stunning. That's what I want. Yes Ritchie plays as he feels and does his own thing but that's probably because he can't remember how he played the song in the first place, something he openly admits. There are also specifics of certain solos that as fans we want to hear. Stargazer, Light In The Black, Gates Of Babylon, I want to see and admire someone who has the skill and technical ability to play that as it is on the album, why fiddle with perfection?? Anyway that's what I get when I go and see Blackmore's Blood, and I'm happy with that. I've watched BB's guitarist like a hawk when he plays these solos, and he delivers. All credit to him...

Long live the tribute band!
If you can't get the real thing, either do without or get the next best thing... which IF done well is great entertainment
I saw a Queen tribute band here in Prague recently (Queenie). The singer was no Freddie M and the guy player had a reasonable Brian May sound - were they perfect - no - was it entertaining - Yes they did okay
I'm no great Queen fan, but being a guitar player I know the songs pretty well, and yes there were mistakes and bit and pieces weren't done properly. On the other hand I wasn't up there playing the gig - they were, so why complain?
