Mark IX?
Are we likely to see another lineup change before the band finally finishes, and if so who is likely to leave and who could come in in their place?

Re: Mark IX?
very much doubt there will be a MK IX
in all honesty what would be the point ?it all should have stopped about 20 years ago as far as live performances are concerned, certainly as far as regular touring is concerned, maybe cutting back on touring and giving a better chance of quality rather than quantity would have helped?ie making a DP concert an exciting occasion rather than the same old show every year.

I can agree on what you say Light. But a deep purple concert is still quality even today.
To much touring have, as you say, made it not so exciting maybe but still quality.

Re: Mark IX?
I saw them a month ago and the place was standing up in the end, loving it.
My wife was excited, because having never seen them.
She was at the front in the end..

Re:
It will be Steve as he's already stated this is his last tour and no, I don't see them continuing.

Re: Mark IX?
Serious post for a change. The fact is DP dug themselves into hole as soon as the reunion happened. It became formulaic. The classic songs could not be done justice, the new material was just typical 80s drive time stuff.
Why didn't they spread their wings a bit ? Remember Pink Floyd's Ummagumma ? Each member bringing their own to the table. For example Jon's solo projects were always diverse and fascinating yet his input into DP in terms of writing was minimal. It's criminal. It obviously would not have gone down well with management and sales would have suffered without all the AOR pap. They could have done anything. Indulge RB's rennaisance taste, give Jon's classical influences an airing, give Paicey a swing number to show he's actually a drummer not a metronome. They got stuck in a groove (but without the actual groove). RB & IP both contributed to Bill Shatner's bonkers album with humour and self depreciation, shame they were uanable to do the same with their own band. If it wasn't going to get on the radio it wasn't in. Might have been a good idea at the time, but DP's reputation was ruined. Kids are still discovering IR, MH & MIJ and being blown away then finding S&M and bringing up a little bit of sick. So yes let's have Mark IX. Admit the last 20 years were crap and mellow out with anything except what's expected.

Boy oh boy...they can't win.
The '84 reunion album was a reminder to the public of who they were. More or less. The House of Blue Light is what I call, "spreading their wings" but, some fans did not like them spreading their wings.
As for another lineup....I don't see it.

Re:
At the time of the reunion, the music industry was at its height. Album sales were the key, that is where the money was - hence, a safe (and great) album in PS, and then a not-so-safe-and-not-as-great follow-up. But it was the huge relevance of studio albums, that cost them the long intermission between the two, because it was imperative to make the best possible album. From there, it went downhill because, at the same time, people both got tired of DP as a brand and record sales dropped (and in the beginning everyone saw their own sales diminishing, and not the market in general), and DP as a consequence were mightily confused. They had been signed by the label to be a huge cash-cow, and there must have been major pressure on them not to spread their wings, but to bring in the darn sales. Let's not forget they got dropped by multiple labels during the time from 1984 to now. Hence the many changes that did not resolve anything...until Ritchie left, and without him, they could settle into a nostalgia act touring endlessly, with the occasional record (have you noticed how many more studio albums Ritchie has released over the same time span? There are clearly different priorities).
And no, I don't think the current members will continue once someone (Steve) finally has the guts to call it quits - and he can do it relatively lightheartedly because it's only partially his story, his life, his career.
On the other hand, Glenn...;-)

Re: Mark IX?
Mark IX will happen when Morse leaves or even Gillan. Why? Money talks! Everybody will have a share of the pie!
Believe me there will still be a big market for Mark IX, especially when that new line-up released another studio album, as long as it's called DEEP PURPLE, fans will still buy it.
I still remember Gillan speech at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction....
A great important year with Joe Satriani!
It only needs a "catalyst", a guitarist with the same caliber as Joe Satriani and the flame will continue to burn!!!
Uli Jon Roth, Steve Vai, Michael Schenker, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eric Johnson and many more.

Re: Mark IX?
Simon McBride would be a likely replacement for Steve, as he haa already worked live with Gillan and Don Airey.
As discussed on the other thread about 'power' in DP, it seems that the band need to have at least three members of Mark 2 or 3 to go out under the name so that would suggest they could only survive a lineup change if it is Steve or Don going. They did play a few concerts with Nick Fyffe substituting for Roger though.
As to whether they should continue, I enjoyed them live for the first time last year after being a fan for a long time and they were brilliant so if there's still an audience out there for them, which in Europe at least there definitely is, I see no reason why they shouldn't keep going. However the idea of a one off gig or small tour which wraps things up with special guest former members makes a lot of sense too. These guys are in their seventies now and it must be close to time to finish.
