Smoke on the Water - different versions by the band and spin off bands?
As Purple's signature song and as a band with so many spin off acts, this must be the song in rock history with most versions by bands connected with the original. Certainly can't think of any other.
But which bands/solo acts did it best and worst?
We have at least all the versions of the band Mark 2 onwards, plus as far as I can see:
Rainbow (only with Dio?)
Dio's own band I think, plus with DP on orchestra tour
Whitesnake (seen at least one version of it)
Ian Gillan Band/Gillan (different styles?)
Black Sabbath with Gillan
Glenn Hughes (plus with other bands of his?)
Rod Evans fake DP
Rock Aid Armenia
Any others?
Be interested to hear people's favourite and worst non Mark 2 version and of any other DP related performances of the song.

Rainbow performed SOTW but only with JLT, never with any other line up.

Actually Rainbow performs it now, and did it with Doogie White (it's on the Black Masquerade DVD), JLT and I am not sure about Bonnet and Dio.

Yes sorry, my reply was poorly worded. I meant that no line up before JLT performed it.

Re:
AFAIK Ronnie James Dio only sang it with DP and the orchestra. I'm not aware of any time Dio (the band) performed this song.

Re:
That said, SotW falls under that category of "If I never hear it again, I'll be ok with it" along with;
Black Sabbath-Paranoid & Iron Man
Led Zeppelin-Stairway
The Who-Behind Blue Eyes
Jimi Hendrix-Purple Haze
There are of course others but those are the first ones to immediately pop into my head.

Have to admit Gillan doing it about the Mr Universe / Glory Road period was always fun. Long, noisy intro from Torme and you knew what was coming next. And at the time that was the only place to hear it. Then came Slack Blabbath, oh dear...

Somehow the "It fell with an awful sound" line is an improvement on the original !

Ian Paice did it with the tribute bands "Purpendicular" and "Forever Deep".
Didn't Satch do it with the G3?
