Re: Who owns the name and who has the power in Deep Purple?
Some really interesting stuff here about who has the power in the band these days. How about over the years - who has had the final say at different points and who has exerted their power over the direction of the different albums?
I would say from the first run:
First three albums - Lord, with a bit of Blackmore?
Mark Two - definitely Blackmore, though Gillan/Glover taking more of a lead on Fireball and WDWTWA?
Burn - Blackmore
Stormbringer - shifts to Coverdale and Hughes mostly
Come taste the Band - Bolin and Lord?

The "power" in Deep Purple has always been the audience. Plot a graph charting Blackmore's involvement / interest in the band against a graph charting record / ticket sales and they'll follow the same curve. He knows it, they know it, management know it.

This is not entirely true. When it comes to touring, the non Blackmore band have done very well. I guess they have had more people attending over the years than Blackmore purple.
When it comes to album sales, slower sales started already when Blackmore was in the band.
Slaves & Masters and Battle did ok, nothing more.
They had to end one US tour early and simply cancel the next when Blackmore was still in.
And all artists experience dwindling album sales.. yes?

In fairness the US Tour that ended early was nothing to do with ticket sales.

The US Tour that finished early was the HOBL Tour which was caused by RB breaking a finger. The ticket sales for that tour were good, they were playing large arenas.

I'm talking about the S&M tour. It was ended prematurely indeed. The reason was most certainly low ticket sales.
The House of Blue tour was a success both in the US and Europe, I know that.

Aahh, OK I didn't realise the S&M tour was pulled too. I must admit that that was the time where I lost DP.

Which isn't surprising as they had much more time to attract people. Moreover, their setlist show how much power Blackmore still had when he wasn't in the band any longer.
