The Future - 'Name' franchises
I don't see this happening with Purple or any offshoot bar maybe WS but wondered what everyone thought of the above arrangement.
An example would be Blackfoot, Lynrd Skynard of course have operated something similar for years. I believe Kiss and UFO are considering the idea, the concept of course is that band as was are finished/retired but a key former member acts as a mentor and recruits and guides new younger members in the band’s image and tradition.
I’m unsure how the Blackfoot project is progressing, but I can see this sort of arrangement becoming more and more popular.
After all with the likes of Purple and Floyd and VH we’ve seen the brand name is all important, who’s in and out less so.
I’m unsure how I feel about this, but I guess in the absence of alternatives, it’s ok as a kind of higher level ‘tribute’ act.
Any thoughts?

You could be talking of MENUDO.

Re:
With Floyd you at least had 3 of the 4 and David put an end to it when he felt the time was right. From a writing standpoint, Roger was no doubt important but when it came to the live show, the sound of Pink Floyd was Gilmour and Wright. The combination of their voices and the keyboard and guitar is what made Pink Floyd sound like Pink Floyd, not Roger's bass playing. When I saw Gilmour in '06 with Wright, it still sounded like Pink Floyd when they did Pink Floyd songs. With Wright gone, there can never be a true reunion and there's no way David would allow it as he has control over the name after Waters tried to sue them.

I think it will happen with Foreigner too. Mick Jones is spending less and less time on stage. When I saw them recently he only came on about halfway through the show and to be honest the band are just as good if not better without him.
I think as long as there's some continuity and it's an evolutionary process it's fine. It works with Foreigner because although Mick is the driving force and main songwriter the band was never about him being in the spotlight - it was about the songs and the voice and they've already proved they can replace the voice very successfully.

a very good example John, exactly. Kiss will almost certainly continue without Gene and Paul acutally performing.

Re: The Future - 'Name' franchises
How about another scenario……..key side men/ex members form a completely new band, playing the best of the DP and offshoots catalogue.
A bit like the Don Airey band is doing currently.
Speaking of which I absolutely love Carl Sentence’s voice, those 4 bonus live cuts on ‘One of a kind’ are fantastic, he totally re invents I surrender for instance, really roughing it up.
So with him on vocals, Don still on keys perhaps, Roger maybe on bass, a decent drummer……suitable guitarist…..
Simon McBride comes to mind to keep the Don band theme going but somehow that doesn’t excite me

Re:
Ive seen the 'new' Blackfoot and Dr Feelgood (who are in a similar position) and while they were entertaining enough there was a certain edge missing.
Im more for letting sleeping dogs lie and bands retiring gracefully. Unfortunately there are not enough younger bands coming through to make this a viable option.....

Re: The Future - 'Name' franchises
I don't agree with this sort of thing i.e a band name means nothing to me unless the crucial band members are still in the band.If the founding members and main creators and inspiration for the bands music are no longer there then the band is dead. The music doesn't have to die though ,so any band choosing to go out playing that music can do so as long as they make it clear they are a tribute band and don't hold on to the name of the REAL thing.
Foreigner were always all about Lou Gramm and Mick Jones, if neither are there don't call it Foreigner but a tribute to Foriegner
Thats like the Stones without Jagger and Richards
or Queen without Freddie and Brian
or Led Zeppelin without Plant and Page
or Cream without Clapton and Bruce
or indeed DP without Blackmore and Lord.

Re:
Well, a few people just said on another topic - and I tend to agree - that Seventh Star, CTTB and S&M were quite good records, but should not have been published under the Black Sabbath/Deep Purple name...and in comparison to what we are discussing here, they were a thousand times closer to the original lineups.
Hell, we even complain that current DP should not use the DP name...
I think a band name serves to identify a certain combination of people in a certain period of time and, as such, when members change the name should follow. I don't want to be in a position to have to explain to someone I am a DP fan, "but only in the old century" and not the two following generations. Plus, unless these strange creatures tour only, the new music will be inevitably vastly diferent to the old, so why should I continue to be a fan? Because they carry the name? It really sounds like they take us (the public) for mightily gullible.

Re:
Considering the band's history, every band with Ian Paice on drums who play Smoke OTW could call themselves DP. There are no personal links between DP Mk III and the current DP except Ian Paice (no real musical links as well). Same for Mk I and Mk IV.
