Re: 50th Anniversary - how about guest spots for Simper and Blackmore??
Agree that it would not be on par with what they did in their prime.
To me, there are two reasons for this:
- closure, with a bang and with some degree of reconciliation. They have not killed each other, so I really don't get this rigidity - they have done so much together that was great, so why not do a show to remind us of what they have created, without that lingering feeling of civil war?
- relevance; even if not on par with their old selves, a reunion show would stir the pot just as much as LZ's O2 show; and why not do it? It could be something that makes younger people aware of them and hard rock in general - again, why not, when in this same world Angus Young plans as the only remaining ACDC member a new ACDC record with Axl Rose on vocals?

Re:
I would have been first in the queue for this type of gig a while ago but can't see how it would be anything other than disappointing. Went to the first Rainbow show in 2016 in Birmingham and loved it on the night then listened to the recording and thought..ummm..not very good at all.
Purple have aged somewhat more gracefully but i wouldn't expect-say- a repeat of the 1993 performances if they tried it now (25 years on- crikey where's my life gone)

But the great stuff that they have created in the past is the problem, as afterwards would anyone really want to hear anything from the last 15-20 years again? IG is not stupid, he knows it would kill the current touring band.

Exactly my thoughts.

This is just a romantic dream that could have little artistic value. Of course it's a wonderfully nostalgic concept but imagine if it happened and turned into an embarrassing debacle: would that be a memory to cherish? Let's leave it alone. Gillian is probably right to be wary.

Re: 50th Anniversary - how about guest spots for Simper and Blackmore??
Let's talk about romantic dreams; here's mine:
Arrange to get these great musicians (all past¤t members of Deep Purple) gathered on a stage. No rehearsal, no setlist. No plans. Just let them have an hour and see what happens.
Somebody would start playing. Somebody would join in. The rest would follow and add color. Together they would create something, because that's what they are, creative musicians. It would be doomed to be new and fresh, and great as only musicians of this level could accomplish.
Improvise it all. It couldn't go wrong. It would be great.
At least in my dream it would.
(If I had a billion dollars I didn't knew how to spend, I'd consider to make respective managements a call.)

Wouldn't that be 10** people on stage at once? Glenn, David, Nick, Ian G, Roger, Ritchie and Steve? You sure this sounds like a good idea? Hmmm....could think of a few better things to do with the money. Maybe if what remains of Mark 2 plus Don could spend a week without fighting and actually rehearse AND if Gillan's voice could stand up to it, it MAY then be worth it.
Oops...forgot about Joe Lynn Turner! Is he really going to be invited, too? Oh no! Why not find Rod as well?!

What is REALLY silly, ptr, is that you seem to believe that DP (or anybody else, for that matter) only do what they want and not what they perceive to be the expectations of their fan base. Now, they could think it's not worth the hassle, and I could understand this approach - but don't come here telling the story that they only play for the love of music. IG retired in 1974, that was what he WANTED to do when he thought he had enough financial stability - once he lost it all, he got the gift of the love for music magically back - and it's just one example, I'm not picking on him.
In DP´s case right now I´m 100% sure they are doing it mainly because they cant live other way (they cant live without doing a music) - playing is their live, stage is their 2nd home. Don cant be without being on stage - he plays with Purple and solo band, Steve reunited with Dregs, Paicey performs on stage with various bands just to keep on playing… When DP has a break at the start of next year, IG is performing with RMC. They could have retire decade ago with 40 years anniversary and they didnt, they could have retire many times and they didnt - why, because they cant be without doing music. It´s simply one of meanings of their life (aside of family life of course). IG retired from music business because he was "worn" - not only physically, but mainly on psychological side. Now? Touring is demanding of course, but it brings them happiness.
Exactly this. They do it because it is all they know how to do, they don't know how to retire so they keep playing. If the audiences get smaller, they simply play smaller venues, if they grow then they play bigger venues.
It is what they do.

In my romantic dream this would not be a problem. In the real world... perhaps some realism would be in place.
But JLT would be good, if for nothing else, he would most likely be a good influence on TMIB.
And wouldn't it be great to have Ian Gillan, David Coverdale and Joe lynn Turner doing harmonies together??
And when someone in the audience cry out to Joe "who are you??", he would reply "I'm the guy from Deep Purple!"

They needn't be all together on stage the whole time. It would be a nice opportunity to finally make the idea happen which Chris Curtis had in 1967 when he was involved in the band's foundation process: the idea of a roundabout. Ian Paice and Don Airey on stage the whole time, and the others coming and going. Just the final SOTW being played by all of them.
