Best British band and best album at the Planet Rock awards

It was very interesting to hear that the band has won these two awards from the Planet Rock listeners . I listen to the station quite a lot in the car and the purple they play is from the 70s and occasionally perfect strangers/kaybd . The station play new music from new bands but very little new music from established bands beyond two weeks of a new album release. My opinion is that classics don't become classics without airplay and being put out to a wider audience. Anyway these awards are a big positive for a band coming to the end of their career and perhaps show what they could have achieved in the 80s 90s and 00s with a good producer , better quality control of output and probably less touring.

It is a good point that you make re a good producer. I have never warmed to RG's production (Down To Earth apart, which I really like). Just imagine if they had someone of Ezrin's push and drive working with them in the 80's?

Yes, that's a very interesting idea. But there is this banjo player who could/would have vetoed it..? Ahh, only speculations now, we will never know.

Ezrin did a great job on NW?! but over-produced inFinite. Songs too short, no room for the soloing, etc...

So, I think Ezrin in the 80's might have been a fifty-fifty deal.

Dead right. The production of HOBL is dire. I think buried on there are great songs, poorly played and abysmally produced.

Bob did excellent on both albums. The sound on NW and Inf is light years better than some of the previous albums notably Crapture and (((s

Its a shame they hooked up with him so late in their career.

Yes egos would have got in the way and we can't turn back the clock but it's been bloody frustrating the last 34 years , with glimpses of what should have been but mainly underachievement . It may not be a popular view on here but I have enjoyed the consistency of the Morse years but have longed for killer albums from mk2b and concerts with Gillan and Blackmore on equally good form. Oh well.

HOBL is one of my favourite DP studio albums, but you are correct that the production is very poor. Many of the songs feel un-finished but I love the energy and even anger on a couple of the songs.
