The Reunion
It was great news when DP MKII announced a reunion in 1984. Unfortunately it seemed to fall apart too fast. By the time of the recording of HOBL, Blackmore and Gillan were feuding again. I always thought that, after the PS tour, instead of recording a follow-up album, the band should have released a live album from that tour in 1986 and put off making a new album until mid to late 1987. That way, Blackmore and Gillan could have had some time away from each other and also allowed members to put out their own albums if they wanted too. Any thoughts?

What you say here is quite a good idea. Doing it this way could have changeed a lot of stress and animosity between the group.
Or maybe not.. knowing Blackmores history of changing singers.

Re: The Reunion
He seems to get tired of singers pretty quick. I wonder how long RR will last in Rainbow?

Re: The Reunion
He does, but he's also a lot older now and makes a lot of self-deprecating jokes about his past deeds.

Re: The Reunion
I thought they should have taken 5-6 years off and meet up for another album/tour and continue that trend. Hindsight being 20-20, its hard to know what contractual arrangements they had at the time.

Re: The Reunion
I thought that they should have gotten HOBL out sooner to capitalize on their current popularity and keep the momentum going. The younger generation has a very short attention span. If you don't keep things fresh, they move on very quickly.
Maybe the album and tour every so many years would have worked and secured their legacy or maybe they would have become a sort of footnote in Rock and Roll legend.

Re:
We see this with the benefit of hindsight, but around the time they got back together (84-5) all the interviews they gave at the time pointed to this as being permanent, and I believe they were genuine. They really thought it could work long-term, and the chemistry was amazing.
It was only towards 88, when the disillusionment with HOBL and then NP settled, that they started going off in opposite directions again, probably pointing fingers to each other to lay the blame for the missing success - to me, the red light started flashing in an interview Ritchie gave when promoting NP, when he was asked where he saw himself in five years from then and he replied something like he could be playing renaissance music by then, and certainly would not be in DP anymore. As always, Ritchie was telling the truth but it sounded, from outside, his usual eccentric self. Still, it was, to me, the first sign of things deteriorating - and given there was no internet, bands could literally disappear between albums, so these nuggets were important.

Re: The Reunion
I’d say the other 4 were committed to moving forward and keeping DP together if they could, RB however it was reported started getting cranky, Ie wanted his own way having been used to this for some years.
There’s no way that could continue……he I believe gave them an ultimatum either get rid of Gillan or wasn’t going to continue.
