Let´s say that voices of "these" guys had bigger impact on result than voices of "other" guys. Let´s say that when Gillan recorded the song he "Gillanised" them... Coverdale "coverdalised" them... Dio "dionised" them.... the rest of guys who worked with Ritchie never had that power in character of their voices. That´s the power of voice character and style which means that when IG sang with Black Sabbath I know that some people said "it doesnt sound like Black Sabbath, it sounds more like Deep Purple".... You have singers with strong character of voice (which are IG, DC, RJD) and singers without that character which sounds good but generic (which was and is JLT, which was Doogie and now Romero)....

I actually agree with most of that ptr ,though i would argue that GB also had a unique character to his voice, and his work on DTE was superb, the problem i had with GB was that he could be a bit of a shouter when singing live.
I agree that JLT and Doogie were a drop in standard and are a bit generic, but they do have a bit of character,Romero on the other hand is a copycat vocalist with no character of his own at [sign in to see URL] from the dodgy accent.

Love the idea that RB was not as important in Rainbow as RJD.

That´s not what I said... I said that RJD was almost the same important character for Rainbow sound as Ritchie was - and that his departure from Rainbow meant the end of "real" Rainbow to me. You have a band and everyone is part of overall sound - let´s say that "whole sound" is 100 points, Ritchie was 50 points of whole, Ronnie 35 or 40 points of it, and remaining 10 - 15 points was "the rest" of band which changed with each album. emoticon

I see what you mean. I would say that whilst in Rainbow Cozy Powell was an integral sound of the band too. In my opinion when CP and also Bonnet left after DTE Rainbow were never the same again and did become RB and a bunch of faceless backing musicians.

The trio of Blackmore ,Dio and Powell were an awesome tour de force and CP was every bit as important as Dio to the sound of classic Rainbow IMHO but neither were nearly as important as Blackmore himself, i also think that Tony Careys keys were unique as well.

Losing Bonnet and Powell after DTE was the beginning of the end for me with Rainbow.
Can't warm to JLT vocals at all, and while DW is far better, he is a bit "any man".

I don't think Born Again sounds anything like Deep Purple, it sounds like Black Sabbath with IG singing. I don't know anyone who thought this was a good idea but I have to admit to liking the album.

Agree after Bonnet and Powell left Rainbow almost became a Foreigner type band with a better guitarist but worse singer and Foreigner were far better at being Foreigner and had vastly superior songs emoticon
I hate JLTs vocals i recognise hes a decent singer but really cant stand his voice or indeed his personality
Born Again was a strange album to me i cant really warm to it, though i agree it does sound like Sabbath with Gillan singing rather than Deep [sign in to see URL] has some good tracks but sounds like sh1t !

I am afraid that after DTE I was pretty much finished with Rainbow. I can recognise that JLT can sing, but I just can't listen to him at all.

I like Born Again, I agree the sound was not great but the remastered album is better. Great riffs from Iommi and IG sounded great on the record.

Also Last in Line Heavy Crown is a modern Hard Rock Masterpiece released 2 years ago - oh who was on that Campbell, Appice and Bain of course - no surprise that it didn't rock!!! Andrew Freeman did great on vocals as well!!!!

Re: Dio Returns

Back to the topic.............

RJD(rip) was a most amazing singer and performer and writer. Now he's dead. The people who played with him were all great musicians etc etc but that time has passed, it's gone now, just like RJD(rip). So touring with a hologram trying to recapture that time, is somewhat incongrous I reckon.

Bottom line.
It's cheap shot, to get more $$$$ and thats it.

Someone should give them a hologram showing dollar notes.

Good. I mean, I feel bad for the musicians having to go through this, sort of. I just hope they come to their senses and end it sooner rather than later.

And that others *coughSharonOsbournecough* learn from this and don't get any more ideas...
