It is true that we expected Gillan to be the front-man, but at that time his voice was baked. I really think that JLT kept the Purpsters going and at least in the publics eye. Blackers and RG were quite familiar and comfortable with him. I really think that Sebastian Bach would would have been a good choice. We'll never know.
I agree with everything that you say, just think that by that point the game was up. They should have gone their own separate ways for a couple of years and got back together a couple of years later if the will and magic was there.

I see what you mean. They wasted too much time getting HOBL out, chopping their momentum off at the knees. Once again, Gillan started out pretty good, but then pounded his voice into oblivion. JLT came in and they were still selling out large arenas. He did a nice job and gets slagged way too much on this and other forums. I thought that SB would have been a better choice. He has a great voice and also looks like a rock star. Plus, he and his band were pretty popular.
You're right, though. They should have called a sabbatical after IG left. Other than that, I think that they should have blown the whole thing up after the S&M tour instead of getting a hoarse Gillan back.

Re: Perfect Strangers Alpine Valley 1985
I don't see the need for all this beating around the bush i.e. Gillan was not bad then got worse etc etc
The truth of the matter is that Gillan was a washed up drunken has been by the time of the reunion. He sang badly and was NEVER at any time in his career a great frontman ?Great singer YES but frontman NO.
DP were 5 years too late getting back together they should have reformed around 78 and would have still been awesome.
Gillan was still a great singer back then and Blackmore was still playing brilliantly.By 84 they were a shadow of former glories.
The one good thing that came out of the reunion was that we got to see Jon Lord return to being the player we knew he was instead of the backing musician he had become in Whitesnake.

Once again, I agree with most of your statement. I do think, though, that Gillan had some good moments during the reunion. As I said, you have to compare Gillan during the PS and HOBL tours to what he was capable of at that time. In no way was he even 50% of what he was in 1978 through early 1982 and probably barely 30% of what he was during MKII. At times, he turned in pretty good performances compared to how many recordings show him in pretty bad shape.
I do think that Blackers played OK. I don't think that his talent was ever in doubt, just the way he was playing. He did well at times. Eh, it could have been better.
Lord was great, as usual. I think that his duels with Blackers were some of the best in any era. Maybe every tune should have been a guitar/keyboard duel.
The reunion should have happened after IG stopped doing goofy IGB stuff. Maybe he could have done a year with the Byrd/Barnacle line-up, as he didn't beat up his chords with them. After that, DP. The show with Blackers guesting should have sparked the fire, but didn't. Too bad.

I agree with both of the above, but i thought/think that PS was great comeback album, and i loved the Knebworth show. RB was good and angry, and JL was sublime.
I also saw them at the NEC on the 1987 HOBL tour, and they were even better that night. There are plenty of examples of when they were not great, mostly IG but the RB and JL duels were fantastic.
It was after this point where it should have been shelved, JLT was a far better singer than IG at this point, but nothing with him sounded like DP. And when IG came back in 93 that really was end, a singer that can't sing doesn't really work no matter how good RB and JL were playing.
Nothing since has shown and imagination or magic that has really been deserving of the DP name.

Re: Perfect Strangers Alpine Valley 1985
Interesting, it’s probably all happened the way it needed to given the dynamics and personalities.
There is a case for saying ‘STOP’ after the end of the House of blue light tour, September 1987. But don’t forget those last few European dates were very successful, the gravy train was going strong and the band were playing well.
When they re grouped in 1988, things started to fall apart. To be fair Ritchie called a meeting and said he didn’t want to continue, .....unless of course they got a new singer.
That’s when the other 3 should have had more backbone, problem is none of them had options outside of Purple.
So what happened was inevitable, as was IG coming back, he had to.
Ritchie has always had the power because he has options, he can afford to walk away if he doesn’t get what he wants.

Remember they also did a short tour in support of NP in Aug-Sep of '88. Wonder how that one went.. Was the band any good?
I also recall they'd even demo'ed some of S&M with Gillan still in the band and this is probably when things really fell apart.

Re: Perfect Strangers Alpine Valley 1985
the giants gig, and September European dates appear to have been strong strangely enough, I guess as you say it was in the studio where it fell apart.

Re:
I saw the Milan gig and it was not bad, although I recall it being somewhat shorter than usual, probably 90 minutes or so, and with a bare bones production compared to the stage they had in 1987. They played a fairly large place, after having been here a year before with two gigs.

Re:
The story goes that IG hated the music that was being put forward for S&M but was in no place to put any alternative ides forward. His lifestyle at the time was not very professional and he simply played into RB's hands. He couldn't sing nor contribute any ideas and the rest of the band agreed with RB that they should out him and get in a singer that could sing.
Everything to this point seems perfectly acceptable, but then they offered the job to JLT who was 100% the wrong choice.
