Smoke on the Water is a terrible choice for an encore . Closing the main set would be ok, but not an encore. Because you might not be asked to play an encore, and that means you've not played your best song!
An encore shouldn't be taken for granted (Ritchie understood this in the old days). You come back on if the audience calls for it and you feel you have more to give. But if you're PLANNING to go off and come back on again, then it's not an encore, you're just taking a rest in between two parts of the set.
Totally agree. Encores should never be taken for granted and should be spontaneous.

Re: Temple of the king played tonight
Ok I've watched every clip i can find from the Hydro show and overall apart from a few bright spots its in the main poor.
Ritchie hardly plays a single riff properly, many solos are just lazy slide efforts with little finesse and no fire. There is no longer anything remarkable about his playing its nice at times and thats all.
Ronnie Romero for me doesn't give a particularly great performance either?Kinda like a Chilean version of the X factor singer.
Its pretty poor stuff and the atmosphere seems pretty dull as well i.e. not much sign of any great crowd involvement or energy either.
Listen to Live In Germany and compare it to this, todays "Rainbow" is sh1t in comparison. Its all a bit Karaoke / tribute band IMHO.
I know some will say you cant compare this to 40 years ago but if your going to go out and call the band Rainbow then comparison is perfectly reasonable.
Blackers should have stuck to BN thats really all hes capable of today.

Re: Temple of the king played tonight
I was there and yes, I've seen RB play a lot better. But I went to the gig just wanting to enjoy it and I did. Yes there were some fluffs but I love hearing him play and I wasn't expecting Live in London or '76 Germany. His playing is definitely not what it once was (please, no technical !@#$, I do play guitar), but for me, the band put on a good show with pretty good sound, certainly from where we were. I love Rainbows music, and it was great to hear all the classics played in front of me.

I know I was harsh last year, but I've seen a DVD of the London show, audio dubbed with a proper AUD audio recording and it was good. Yes, there were sloppy parts of RB, almost always has been. But some of these YT videos are just made with a crappy cell phone, by people who do not know anything about recording live shows.
Watching that London show, made me believe the old git still got it inside him. Not his old self, but a much more than decent performance throughout and some very inspired soloing. Hat's of to grumpy.
Here we go with the usual old crap about how the YT clips "somehow magically don't show what really happened" in the gig. This is just utter nonsense. SURE they don't have the sound quality and SURE they don't capture the atmosphere BUT they very effectively capture EVERY mistake and mistiming and EVERY bum note.
I have to ask what would you prefer to see ?
A nice polished overdubbed, skilfully edited dvd where everything is absolutely perfect BUT everything is entirely FAKE.
Or REALITY a less polished YT Clips where everything is actually REAL and WHAT THEY ACTUALLY PLAYED, INCLUDING THE RUBBISH BITS ?
I just can't understand the thought process that says a YT Clip doesn't show what they did and somehow it makes them seem worse than they actually were?????!!!!
A YT clip shows EXACTLY how good or bad their playing was or wasn't, simple as that, no edits, no overdubs, just what happened on the night.
If you were able to read and comprehend English, you would have understood that I didn't refer to YT itself but to the recording equipment and the person recording it. Try to read it out loud to yourself, and you might get it.
Don't be such a supercilious c8nt if you can manage to avoid it Mr Snip. If you think that a Camera Phone can't capture mistakes in live performances, you're a bigger fool than I had you for so far. It's a lubricious suggestion to claim that somehow the camera phone changed in ANY way WHAT they actually played, the notes they played etc!! Grow up man and stop defending the indefensible.

I have to agree. I attended Birmingham last year and 02 this year, had a few drinks and really enjoyed both nights out, but i didn't go to be musically educated.
Watching the Memories of Rock video, listening to the live CD, the 'new' recordings and now watching the 2017 YT clips I have to admit its all a bit bunk. Had this been a proper reformed Rainbow with the likes JLT, Rondinelli, etc, RB would have been seriously out of his depth.
On the one hand (in 2016) the return to rock was for fun and nostalgia and yet in 2017 he says that 'music is too serious' !
The band looks average, I'm even underwhelmed with Jens. And RB looks like an imposter.
Lots of talk of age and playing acoustic, etc. But check out Steve Howe, Jan Akerman, Frank Marino, Robin Trower, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, Mick Box and dare I say it Eric Clapton.
Its very sad and its in big venues where people pay real money for a professional show. And everyone has a camera phone.

God yes, the last thing I would want is dodgy trousers at a Rainbow gig!

Re: Temple of the king played tonight
I actually think the Glasgow gig was the best show so far. (in terms of performance. I have my doubts about the setlist)
There were a few really weak moments (in particular TOTK) but as a whole I think the band delivered a solid performance. Ritchie also had a better sound than on the previous shows.
Ronnie Romero is a fantastic singer. He handles every era really well.
My only concern is that they are a quite boring band visually. The projections are good, but it's not enough.

Re:
RR is horrible on Mk2 stuff and pretty good on Dio stuff and Mistreated. Mixed bag (between well acceptable and average) on the rest of stuff.
