Don't feel so bad about missing the HOBL show. Here in Kansas City, Blackmore was in a piss poor mood the whole night. He spent nearly the entire show glued to the drum riser, rarely acknowledging there was an audience. It was obvious that the band was in bad shape and I figured it was the end. I didn't see the band again until 1997(and had to drive to 9 hours to Chicago for that!)
However, I enjoy the five post-reunion tracks on Nobody's Perfect. All five are (IMO) the definitive versions of those particular songs. I rarely listen to the rest of that album though. All the oldies suffer from a lack of interest by the band and pale in comparison to other versions.

If we'd gone into the studios with these tapes & overdubbed guitar, drums [or] whatever it took to make it sound super, it wouldn't've been 'true to the faith'. I'm just a great believer that live we're [Deep Purple] at our best. I'd be hypocritical if I overdubbed new vocals or new [instrumental] solos. So I did my utmost to keep the album as honest as possible."

 "The best...was recorded in Phoenix; in fact, a lot of the performances come from our shows in Phoenix, which is the night that Ritchie broke his finger & you can actually hear the moment it happens during "Space Truckin'". Because of that, I couldn't use what I considered to be the best version. Nomally when something goes wrong Ritchie is renowned for storming off the stage...this gig, not only did he finish the song, but he came back on & did an encore! That just goes to show that Phoenix was a 'magic' gig for us."
