Re: Nobody's Perfect - why so many haters????

I love this album for the reunion era tracks (based on the '99 remaster) but wished they had put The Unwritten Law and Mad Dog on it as well. I know they only played Call of the Wild a few times which is fine as I don't care for the song at all.

When it originally came out I got the vinyl first, then the cd. As usual, the vinyl sounded more full and richer than the cd did and I was annoyed they made it into a single disc at the expense of Dead or Alive. As I said before, the '99 2cd remaster makes up for this, but with the extra time they now had, adding those two other tracks I mentioned would've been a nice bonus. I saw this tour twice (Detroit and Toledo) and was blown away by both shows, maybe even more so than the two PS shows I saw (which were still fantastic!). I'm still bitter we never got a TBRO tour here (I had tickets; Detroit was the first show of the tour).

Totally cut and paste... I hardly play it, except for Bad Attitude and Dead or Alive...as I got screwed out of the HOBL tour that I slept outside for tix....Blackie broke his finger before Miami.

Sour grapes....whatever....

Don't feel so bad about missing the HOBL show. Here in Kansas City, Blackmore was in a piss poor mood the whole night. He spent nearly the entire show glued to the drum riser, rarely acknowledging there was an audience. It was obvious that the band was in bad shape and I figured it was the end. I didn't see the band again until 1997(and had to drive to 9 hours to Chicago for that!)
However, I enjoy the five post-reunion tracks on Nobody's Perfect. All five are (IMO) the definitive versions of those particular songs. I rarely listen to the rest of that album though. All the oldies suffer from a lack of interest by the band and pale in comparison to other versions.

Mark :

A recognisable pattern :

Having a frustrated experience and conclude that your evening is representaive of the whole tour.
Believe me : IT WAS NOT.

But I do agree Ritchie's playing was.....ahem......differnt to what we were used to before.
Same for Paicey.
Both found back their old sound between 90 and 93.
Gillan has been struggling as long as I can remember, well...since the early 80's, that is.

In general EVERY album is a dissappointment when you are used to IN ROCK and Made In Japan.

The Stuttgart(Also listen to the great boots of that tour, please)1993 album was a big improvement but Gillan has never been able to sing like the 70's again.

A part is due to smoking and drinking et all, but without the screams it could be great still.

I loved the HOBL shows I witnessed. Meaning, 3 were great to fantastic, one was a bit like yours I think.
People who went with me that evening also thought they now knew and concluded DP were history.
The night before was AWESOME and everybody, including the securitycrew in front of the stage!!!, was in full awe.

Some Roger Glover comments about "Nobody's Perfect":

"The release of this album ["Nobody's Perfect"] is perfect timing for us because "House of Blue Light" was disappointing; it did okay, but it would've been nicer to have had a bigger hit with it. It misses that 'trademark' assocated with Deep Purple, which this live album has written all over it. This is real Deep Purple, this is a definitive statement like "Made In Japan" was a definitive statement about the band in '72 - that was the band. This ["Nobody's Perfect"] is a 'state of the union' address."

"It's interesting to listen to the older songs [and] then listen to the performances we put in now - they've tightened up a lot & probably gotten a lot faster. If you listen to "Smoke On The Water" from "Made In Japan" & then from "Nobody's Perfect" - or "Nobody's Purple' as we [in the band] call it - it's different enough to warrant a place on the album. I was initially quite concerned with putting too much of the old stuff on this album."

"By the end of the ["House of Blue Light"] tour we had tapes of 20 concerts that we kept...I don't think people want 'perfection' - I think they want the 'magic' of the night, the 'feel' of the night. It doesn't matter if it's out of tune here or there or if they missed a riff. In fact, that adds to it - gives it 'character'. "Made In Japan" was a 100% honest [live] album and this one ["Nobody's Perfect"] is 99.5% [honest]. Iadmit to taking certain segments from one night & sticking it in another show. If we'd gone into the studios with these tapes & overdubbed guitar, drums [or] whatever it took to make it sound super, it wouldn't've been 'true to the faith'. I'm just a great believer that live we're [Deep Purple] at our best. I'd be hypocritical if I overdubbed new vocals or new [instrumental] solos. So I did my utmost to keep the album as honest as possible."

"The best...was recorded in Phoenix; in fact, a lot of the performances come from our shows in Phoenix, which is the night that Ritchie broke his finger & you can actually hear the moment it happens during "Space Truckin'". Because of that, I couldn't use what I considered to be the best version. Nomally when something goes wrong Ritchie is renowned for storming off the stage...this gig, not only did he finish the song, but he came back on & did an encore! That just goes to show that Phoenix was a 'magic' gig for us."

...all above comments from Roger Glover excerpted from an interview titled "Nobody's Purple" authored by Pete Makowski that appeared in Metal Hammer magazine, June 20th, 1988

Mark : Roger, and not only Roger, talks out of ass regularly.

Several boots show us that it could have been a better album.
Btw, I saw at least 2 shows(Out of 4)that had a much better FEEL and PERFORMANCE.

Q: What's the difference between "Made In Japan" and "Nobody's Perfect" ?

A: " 'Made In Japan' was done really fast. I'm pleased with the new album ["Nobody's Perfect"] because it shows how the band has improved - it's not like we rehashed 'Made In Japan'. 'Nobody's Perfect' shows what Deep Purple are like 12 years later as far as playing ability goes...on tracks like 'Lazy' the playing is much better. We've learned to play better - at least I hope we have!
Originally we [Deep Purple] were going to go back in the studio & do another studio lp but there was a lot of 'outside' pressure for us to record a live album, promote that & then go into the studio again."

Q: Are you talking about 'pressure' from the record company?

A: "No, there was just a general opinion gathered from conversations with audiences and 'people in the know' that people wanted to hear what we did live. A lot of people wanted to hear new versions of the 'classic' songs so we thought, 'Right, let's do this properly." - Ritchie Blackmore excerpted from an interview titled "Nobody's Purple" authored by Pete Makowski that appeared in Metal Hammer magazine, June 20th, 1988

Mark : An oldie here is there is ok with me, BUT I wanted great renditions of the recent(then)studio tracks like TUL, DOA, A Gypsies Kiss, etc.

I bought this one on vinyl when it came out and loved it, in retrospect I can understand the complaints some have for it.
I just listened to it on youtube for the first time in forever. I still enjoy it, maybe it's the nostalgia.
Anyone have any idea what that fart like noise is that closes the album after Hush? I always wondered about that LOL

I caught the two PS shows in Detroit and the HOBL stop here in Toledo. These shows, especially the first Detroit show and the Toledo show, are a great indication of how well they were playing at the time. There must have been others. Why they couldn't find something from these shows and other excellent shows is beyond me. The first Detroit show and the Toledo show were great front to back. Only a couple of tunes on NP come even close. Too bad for DP and their legacy. emoticon

With the exception of one song (The Mule) every track from MIJ is on NP. So it is not a wonder that the public compares these albums. NP could be seen as Made in Japan + some new songs. But the songs from MIJ are performed not so well in the 80s.... and the sound of the newer album lacks too in my opinion.

I think they better should have released a single LP with all the new songs and maybe two tracks from the 70s.
