Re: Deep Purple: an underrated band?

I suggest that Jimmy Page has gone to enormous lengths to build up and protect his image. His output in terms of new material since the demise of ZEP has been negligible. He has been trawling the vaults for lost tapes, films etc. for release. He has been clever to only released the best stuff - he has literally spend months if not years researching and doing this - and the evidence is there to see: good quality product

And Blackmore / Deep Purple? If we are honest some of the latest releases have been wobbly - mixing board tapes. I'm thinking specifically of the Rainbow shows from the DOTE tour. Just good enough for the die hard fans - but hardly CD quality for the masses? Live in Aachen - some of the vocals are doggy if I remember correctly. Okay for die hards but not for the general public.

The problems with Purple are known. Poor management in the 70s and a pretty uninterested Blackmore in all things to do with commercialising his image and that of Purple. I'm not suggesting that it is only his fault but when the leader of the band isn't interested what hope is their for the bands "brand"?

IMHO this is how reputations are built or lost.

For him, it was about the music, not about some PR fuzz. I can understand him.

That's what we want, isn't it?

As for the image:

he wasn't fussy much for his image when he was with the 14 year old Lori Maddox.

Not sure what your trying to say Jon ? yes they've released a few things i.e. the BBC thing from the 60s and the 72 concerts on HTWWW but NONE of it is new material

Expecting new material from a band that no longer exists looks irrational to say the least

Would you rather have it selected carelessly?

Re: Deep Purple: an underrated band?

Is this going to turn into a DP vs LZ Wives/Girl Friends & Groupies ?

If we look at the music and the impact on the music scene at the time. LZ already had 4 US/UK chart albums before DP released MH. If we're discussing MK2 then obviously In Rock is the ultimate rock album, but the LZ catalogue at the time was just a bit more diverse (blues/rock/folk/acoustic ballads) and perhaps a bit more accessible. I certainly don't remember any female DP fans at the time, whereas the girls tended to like the LZ gentler numbers.

When it comes to balls out rock, live shows and improvisation DP beat them every time, but just perhaps the legend is in the catalogue and their overall impact on the scene during their peak. It's also a fact that LZ were playing much bigger shows during this 69-72 period.

You make a lot of good points Johnny. Its also true to say though that DP MK2 split just as they were making the breakthrough to arena rock.

Both bands (and BS) made some great music though, it would be interesting to have a close unbiased look at their contribution to rock.

A hundred years from now I wonder how the history books will tell it, perhaps Chuck Berry, Elvis, The Beatles/Stones, Hendrix, LZ, EVH
