Mark V Live - Freiburg show
So I downloaded two songs of the Mk V bootleg "They'll be the masters" (Live in Freiburg). These were "Highway Star" and "Smoke on the Water". I didn't expect much, as I don't like "Slaves & Masters", but to my surprise those songs proved to be just great!!!
"Highway Star" is probably the fastest version I've ever heard, and certainly one of the best- raw, full of energy, everybody works his ass off... (take notice of Paice's drumming, totally different from what he did two years later on TBRO tour) When it came to Ritchie's solo I was rather sure that he won't make it because of the really fast pace, but he did, maybe not perfect, but again who would've done it better? And the rest of the band is also playing close to the edge of their power. Next was "Smoke", also a surprise because of the structure- first verse sung by Joe only with the piano (and maybe guitar, I have to check) and the rest of the guys joining in later.
So to sum up: I am shocked how much the tension between Blackmore and Gillan ruined DP's real potential in '93. If the rest of the show from Freiburg is as good as HS and SOTW there is no doubt that live, Mark V blew Mark IIc of the stage... It's simply the matter of Blackmore being much more lazy when having Gillan on his right, and that quite affected the whole band. What are your views? I'll also try to download the rest of the Freiburg show, and then say whether it's really that great.

i agree on 2 good things about MKV, great set list (it had Burn in it) and great instrumental stuff ! There are shows from TBRO tour that capture what Purple is all about ! Still, wait till you get Child in Time with JLT on , i rather hear Ian´s screeching vocalis on it, that the weird howls JLT made I just don´t agree that MKV was better than the last MK2 line up

Re: Mark V Live - Freiburg show
I have a VHS tape of a show with JLT from Paris '91, and that not much to write home about, if you know what I mean. IMO MKII of the TBRO tour blows MKV of stage! Got the MKII show from Oslo on VHS, 15.11.93, and that was a whole different cake! When the chemistry is right within MKII, no one in the world beats them!

Re: Mark V Live - Freiburg show
I just listened to the (almost whole) Freiburg show and I must say, that it's even better than i would've imagine. I don't know, I've heard the Ritchie's Last Show from TBRO tour, and although it's good, it's nowhere near the power and energy captured in the Freiburg show. They included in the set the best songs from "Slaves" and they sound like killers (studio versions are average IMHO). And the classic songs also sound bloody good. The only element that doesn't fit so well is... Joe Lynn. He is no Gillan (even Gillan coughing and, what you call it... "catharghing"?). But I tell you, the energy from the band, especially Paice and Blackmore, is great.

Re: Mark V Live - Freiburg show
yes its one of the best show from that era. it is really incredible, blackmore's playing is almost as good as on 1993 and the set is fantastic. the SAM numbers dont really fit into DP, but the playing is so good I dont mind. the whole band smokes. I still dont like JLT as a dp vocalist, but this line up blows the current line up out of the water

Re: Mark V Live - Freiburg show
ok, maybe not blow them up but this was still mark 2 (without Gillan) and no matter who sings, when they get fired up,the chemistry is there and it can be incredible. Still I can't picture DP without Gillan. Somehow his presence pushes it further! And he is THE voice of Dp.

Re: Mark V Live - Freiburg show
I've got the Czech show on video and a Philadelphia show on CD from the S&M tour. Both are kind of boring. There is'nt much interaction between JL and RB. They both seem to be more like JLT era Rainbow shows. Not bad but certainly not as good as the 1993 tour.

Re: Mark V Live - Freiburg show
For me (and not just for me) the Freiburg show is the best show of the S&M tour. The Philadelphia show is quite popular because there's a soundboard recording existing of that, but musically it's far poorer than Freiburg. And the Czech show (Ostrava) was the first show of the tour, so Mk V still had to develop their live act.

Re: Mark V Live - Freiburg show
In a way I'm sorry to say that Freiburg is the best DP show I ever saw.
The band (Blackmore/Lord/PAice/Glover) was on fire, the audience was hot and the show, excellent from the beginning to KAYBD became just crazy from Kocking to the end.
It was a special night for me as it was my 1st gig in Germany and was part of my S&M tour !

Long time no see!
I have to give the show a listen some day. I don't think I have ever heard it.
