Re: Ian Gillan - Live in Nottingham

Rahul, CRP have been offering a lot of old concerts as CD/DVD packs. I think they acquired the rights to all of those old Carlton TV televised gigs because I recognise some of the others in the series, e.g. Magnum at Birmingham Town Hall (I was there emoticon ).

Check out their web site at [sign in to see URL] - I think you'll find some things that will interest you *cough*WishboneAsh*cough* ...and while you're there, buy as much Mostly Autumn stuff as you can emoticon

Well I love S&M and Naked Thunder/Toolbox (especially the latter) at the same time... I think it is a bit short-sighted for people to knock JLT era Purple and praise Naked Thunder as both albums share a lot of things in style and approach IMO.

I must admit that I much prefer Slaves And Masters to Naked Thunder, although it has been a wee while since I have heard NT. I agree though that people always seem quick to knock S&M and conveniently forget Accidentally On Purpose, Naked Thunder and Toolbox!

You're right, CRP are expensive, which is why I prefer to buy things at gigs. It's the same with the Magnum DVD -- I really want it but I'll wait till the band tours and get it then.

Woah, some fabulous stuff there! Wishbone Ash, BJH, Heep and Family are just some of the things I'd love to get my hands on!

How the hell do they expect me to afford all this? emoticon

You were when this one was filmed? Can you be spotted on the DVD I wonder, I've seen this one loads of times (and what an excellent gig it is)! emoticon

If it is the gig I'm thinking of, then I saw myself quite plainly when they showed it on TV. When they carry Bob down the aisle singing... Kingdom of Madness (?) (It's been 12 years!) ...you could quite plainly see me, my friend, and my sister.

That was a fantastic night, but then Magnum Christmas shows always were. Instead of a support band, they had their roadies on stage playing rock records, DJ-style. And any old tour merchandise they had left over, they chucked out into the audience. I *still* use my "Magnum '92" souvenir key ring emoticon . After the gig, they bussed everybody over to a nearby nightclub where there was late-night performance by five slightly drunk guys playing a bunch of rock'n'roll songs... I think they were called "Really Big Gun" or something like that emoticon

Yeah, that's Kingdom Of Madness alright! Next time I watch this DVD I'll look out for you! emoticon I've sadly never seen them live, although I have caught Bob Catley on his first solo album UK tour (on what was essentially one of my first proper live gigs), I can still remember him and the band tearing into tracks like On A Storyteller's Night, a very memorable night indeed!

I have the video, which is more than decent just a bit short. Though, nothing can beat the intimate atmosphere of Garth Rocket and The Moonshiners live with some funny incidents here and there.

No More Cane On The Brazos will always remain some of my favourite Gillan vocal tunes, even if he hasn´t written it he brings so much across with it vocally.
