Re: Ian Gillan - Live in Nottingham
WABMC was excellent. Really good performances throughout. Though it sounded a little like Deep Purple MK8 rehearsing in a studio, if you know what I mean. All the ingredients were there but it just wasn't quite as good as the way Purple can play it.
Listening to No Good luck now. I always really enjoyed this on the Naked Thunder album. A great fun tune. And it works live too! With a cracking guitar riff, and some excellent singing, this really works for me!

Well I love S&M and Naked Thunder/Toolbox (especially the latter) at the same time... I think it is a bit short-sighted for people to knock JLT era Purple and praise Naked Thunder as both albums share a lot of things in style and approach IMO.

Short-sighted?
I can only praise or criticise what I hear.

Re: Ian Gillan - Live in Nottingham
Finished listening to the last two tracks now. Lucille was a bit unnecessary. I know Gillan loves his early rock n roll, but with a back catalogue as extensive as his, I'd have loved to have heard another solo tune. An old Gillan track would have been nice. No Easy Way perhaps?
Then of course, you get the obligatory Smoke on the Water. A decent version but not one to cause many ripples amongst the list of best Smoke versions!
So all in all, a great little gig. Nothing out of this world, but just some excellent, good time rock n roll, played with a great enthusiasm for their art.
Good stuff.

I enjoyed S&M more than Naked Thunder because I was expecting a better comeback from Gillan and S&M filled the void better for me.
Whether or not it's a better album is not really the point.
When Gillan tries to sound poppy or even pretty,it's not a good thing as far as I'm concerned,he's a rough non technical
(for the most part) vocalist, when he is out of his element he sounds smug and forced.
There is one huge similarity that I find on Tollbox and S&M though, and that is the riff to
Hang Me Out To Dry sounds almost as if they took it from the beat structure of
The Cut Runs Deep + Gillan going on in the tilte track several times about being "right or wrong" which JLT mentions once at the begining of King Of Dreams, just some blatent similarities there.
Bottom line for me is,although NT is not a bad album Toolbox is the one I was waiting
for and he delivered such a fine performance on that album that it makes up for anything unsatisfying from Gillan before or since for me...
Toolbox and Purpendicular are crowning acheivements in my book and they remain
fresh to me to this day,to even come close to matching those two efforts would only serve as a bonus for me till the end of the line.
About Rahul's topic:
I like WABMC and the intense drama that
NMCOTB has, what a deep brooding performance that was.

I do like Naked Thunder but I know where you are coming from. Your comment above is how I feel about Accidentally on Purpose, and for several tracks on Naked Thunder, particularly on side 2.
AoP is not a bad album, but then it hardly captures my imagination either, save for a few fabulous tracks here and there.
But then, Gillan's pop side worked a treat with Episode Six and Cher Kazoo (in my opinion) so maybe this is just a feature of the post-reunion Gillan, when his phrasing and style has changed.

I really enjoyed Naked Thunder too. See my previous post. It's not a perfect album and it has some throwaway tracks, but the songwriting is excellent and Ian's attempts at a softer sound work quite well for the large part.
I also enjoyed Naked Thunder, a little bit less now because it sounds dated for me, but is it what you were expecting from Ian after his sacking ? How is it that many people are disappointed by FM S&M and tell nothing about FM Naked Thunder ?
Is it because they forgive more Ian than Ritchie ?

I loved Toolbox. That was how Gillan should have been singing with Purple. A Fabulous vocal performance. He really let it fly with that one!
I agree !! There are not enough quiet moments and sometimes too many guitars, but the vocal performance is awesome. Great album

I'm not going by the style of the music. I;m going by what I hear. JLT has made some great albums, notably BooS, HTP and Mother's Army, so its got nothing to do with how I feel about the singer.
But the songs on S&M are extremely dull, I find. Ritchie is the best thing on it, but the rest of the band are pretty lethargic, and the song-writing is horrible. A.Band.On the rocks.
The songwriting on Naked Thunder is more interesting and doesn't take itself too seriously. It's a whole lot more enjoyable, even if a guitarist of Ritchie's calibre is missing. It's not a great album, but its pretty good, and I like it.

Wasn't aimed at you, I just get the feeling on this forum that people prefer to bash S&M endlessly and avoid to talk about an equally AORish album such as Naked Thunder.
They're both very solid efforts for my money, certainly not the best both artists have put out, but enjoyable and different enough nonetheless...

Re: Ian Gillan - Live in Nottingham
Today it was my turn to pick up a bargain: Toolbox for only £3.99 .
